Trevor Bauer’s journey back to Major League Baseball faced another challenge on Wednesday afternoon. The former Cy Young Award winner, who has been effectively excluded by Major League Baseball, encountered a serious car accident in Arizona. Bauer, aged 35, was involved in a collision while driving his black McLaren on a street in the Phoenix area.
Bauer has not pitched in the MLB since the 2021 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is currently pitching for the Long Island Ducks in the Atlantic League and recently struck out 10 against the Lexington Legends. According to TMZ, Bauer was driving at the posted speed limit of 45 mph and was not responsible for the accident. Emergency services confirmed that no one needed hospitalization.
Remarkably, this is not Bauer’s first unfortunate incident involving a McLaren. In 2019, a semi-truck tire flew off a highway and crushed his parked 2016 McLaren 650S at a dealership.
Bauer’s promising career, highlighted by a Cy Young Award and a three-year, $102 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, was disrupted in 2021 due to sexual assault accusations. Although criminal charges were not filed and Bauer has insisted on his innocence, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a 324-game suspension, later reduced to 194 games by an arbitrator.
Bauer, wearing number 96 for the Diablos Rojos, plays in the Mexican Baseball League, trying to revive his career in a league away from the MLB spotlight. Despite never facing criminal charges, MLB teams have been reluctant to sign Bauer. Currently, Bauer holds a 4-1 record with a 2.43 ERA for the Ducks.
Bauer was in Arizona for back spasms rehabilitation. He has spent months advocating for another chance in MLB, even offering to play for a minimum salary. After surviving the controversies and walking away unscathed from the recent collision, Bauer continues to pursue a major league comeback.
