As the Stanley Cup Playoffs approach the conference finals, four teams remain in contention, two from each conference. Determining which team stands out in the NHL requires a close analysis of their performance so far.
Carolina Hurricanes
Leading the pack are the Carolina Hurricanes. They have remained unbeaten throughout the playoffs. While their competitors—the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres—pushed their series to seven games, the Hurricanes made it look like they had a long break instead. Veteran Taylor Hall, at 34, has shown exceptional form reminiscent of his prime years with the Edmonton Oilers. Although facing Montreal might pose more challenges than the previous rounds, Carolina is a strong favorite in the East.
Colorado Avalanche
Though the Hurricanes have the best record, the Colorado Avalanche have delivered a notable playoff performance by eliminating the Minnesota Wild in the conference semifinals. Under regular circumstances, Colorado could top this list, but the absence of star defenseman Cale Makar due to a day-to-day injury for Game 1 of the Western finals could impact their title aspirations.
Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens continue to show resilience. They persevered through two rounds, reaching Game 7 both times. Their latest triumph came via overtime against Buffalo. This team seems ahead of its development, with much promise for the future. Lane Hutson, the leading scorer with points, is just 22. Alex Newhook, the top playoff goal scorer, secured the overtime win against the Sabres at 25. Their future looks promising, no matter the outcome against the prevalent Hurricanes.
Vegas Golden Knights
The Vegas Golden Knights have performed admirably, led by standout player Mitch Marner. However, their path to the conference finals included matches extending to Game 6 against the Utah Mammoth and Anaheim Ducks, teams with less playoff experience and lower expectations. Clashing with the Avalanche in the conference finals presents a greater challenge compared to their previous matchups.
Each team offers unique strengths, with the playoffs set to unveil how these will translate into eventual success.
