According to court documents, President Donald Trump and the Justice Department have agreed on a settlement related to Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department. The lawsuit, filed in January by Trump personally in a Miami federal court, alleged that government agencies improperly allowed a contractor to leak sensitive tax information belonging to Trump, his sons, and his company.
Trump accused the IRS of mishandling his tax returns, resulting in their unauthorized release to the media in 2020. His sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., as well as the Trump Organization, were also plaintiffs in the case. Neither the Justice Department nor Trump’s legal team immediately disclosed details about the settlement terms.
Last week, ABC News reported that the lawsuit might be withdrawn in return for a fund exceeding $1.7 billion, designated for Trump allies who claimed illegal targeting by the Biden administration. Following the report, a spokesperson from Trump’s legal team expressed that the IRS allowed a politically-motivated employee to illicitly leak confidential information about Trump and his family to various media outlets. The spokesperson emphasized Trump’s commitment to holding those accountable who act against the nation’s interests and its people.
In April, both parties requested a deadline extension in court to facilitate ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the matter amicably and avoiding drawn-out litigation.
