Senator Bill Cassidy, known for his 2021 impeachment vote against Donald Trump, has lost his Republican primary in Louisiana. His defeat comes as two Trump-aligned challengers, Rep. Julia Letlow and state Treasurer John Fleming, move to a runoff election.
Rep. Julia Letlow, endorsed by Trump, secured 45% of the vote compared to John Fleming’s 28% and Cassidy’s 25%. With Letlow not achieving a majority, the race advances to a runoff, projected for June 27 according to NBC News.
This loss strengthens Trump’s influence within the GOP, highlighting the party’s ongoing support for his leadership. Letlow’s lead signals a shift as Republicans who supported Trump’s impeachment are edged out of office. Trump expressed satisfaction over Cassidy’s defeat in a social media post, referencing Cassidy’s ‘disloyalty’ due to the impeachment vote.
Cassidy, in his election-night speech, subtly addressed Trump, emphasizing the principles of democracy over individual grievances. He stated, ‘When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it…you don’t claim the election was stolen.’ He stressed loyalty to the welfare of Americans and the Constitution rather than individual leaders.
Cassidy’s impeachment vote was anticipated to impact his campaign. Last month, he noted it ‘might be’ a liability but emphasized his continued support for Trump’s policies. His approach resonated with some voters, who appreciated his independence, like Donny Gutierrez, who commented, ‘It shows that he’s less influenced by a party.’
Julia Letlow has faced criticisms from Cassidy over stock trades and past advocacy for diversity, which she has addressed, asserting that trades were handled by a third party and that her positions on diversity efforts have changed.
Letlow’s campaign has benefited from Trump’s support, which she described as energizing. She expressed gratitude for Trump’s endorsement, noting Louisiana Republicans’ trust in Trump’s leadership.
Meanwhile, Fleming continues to position himself as the ‘true conservative,’ despite lacking Trump’s endorsement. He self-funded his campaign significantly, aiming to distinguish himself in the race.
The engagement level of Trump in the upcoming runoff remains uncertain. The Democratic primary will also head to a runoff, with farmer Jamie Davis advancing.
Largely, Republicans are poised for a strong showing in the upcoming general election, considering their recent electoral successes in Louisiana, evidenced by Trump’s 22-point win in 2024.
