Hadley Middle School Earns National Gold Star Recognition

Hadley Middle School in Homer Glen has been named a National Gold Star School by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. This recognition highlights the school’s leadership, innovation, and commitment to student success. Out of 57 schools recognized nationwide, Hadley is one of four in Illinois to receive this honor.

Commitment to Student Success

Principal Kristen Schroeder emphasized that every decision made at the school focuses on students’ best interests. Schroeder sees the award as validation for the intentional and comprehensive efforts made in the school community. Through a detailed application process, Hadley demonstrated its strong school culture, shared values, and engagement with families, aligning with the association’s pillars of a successful learning community.

Recognition Process

The school submitted letters of recommendation from teachers, parents, Superintendent Craig Schoppe, and former board member Karen DeFilippis. The application involved writing essays and collecting evidence to showcase the school’s achievements. Completing the process took about three months.

Assistant Principal Holly Odom and Schroeder expressed immense excitement upon learning about the award. Odom highlighted the opportunity to showcase the dedication of teachers and hard work of students. “It takes a village,” she remarked.

Student Engagement and Achievement

Students celebrated by calculating the small percentage of schools receiving the award. The school has established goals with unified efforts towards excellence. Schroeder attributes this recognition to the strong relationships and a culture that values every individual.

Hadley’s Multicultural Fair, featuring community-inclusive presentations, food, and performances, highlights the school’s cultural engagement. Additionally, several student organizations encourage personal growth and leadership, including the Student Council, which plays a key role in setting a positive school environment.

Community Involvement

The Mustang Shout-Out campaign allows students to recognize peers’ kindness and good citizenship. The Multicultural Club celebrates diverse backgrounds with various cultural events. The Hadley Literacy Committee has also shown success in improving writing skills and test scores, pointing to a holistic focus on educational achievements.

Schroeder reinforced that a great school results from collective efforts, emphasizing that focusing on what’s best for the kids is crucial. This recognition motivates students to advocate for themselves and confidently express their voices.

Upcoming Ceremony

The official award ceremony will take place in Florida in July. Other recognized schools in Illinois include Pleasantdale Elementary in La Grange and two Chicago Archdiocese schools: St. Giles School and St. Benedict Preparatory School.
