Nostalgia for Minute Maid’s Five Alive

Minute Maid’s citrus beverage, Five Alive, has lingered in the memories of children from the 1980s despite disappearing from store shelves decades ago. Coca-Cola, the parent company of Minute Maid, quietly discontinued the drink around 1995. Social media users still express curiosity about its disappearance.

“When did Five Alive fall off?”

This question appeared on Reddit about a year ago, prompting nostalgic reactions. A 1979 advertisement for Five Alive, the launch year, drew sentimental responses from those who fondly remember the drink. One commenter wrote, “Honestly, I loved that stuff,” while others questioned its disappearance, asking, “Why did it go away?” and expressing longing, “I miss this stuff so much.”

Five Alive held a special place in the hearts of many who grew up with it. A Redditor three years ago expressed this longing, saying, “I could go for some Five Alive right now.” The posts attracted like-minded reactions and sparked memories of the frozen concentrate version as well.

Many Reagan-era children recall enjoying Five Alive in various forms, such as juice boxes or mixing the frozen concentrate. A Reddit user’s recollection of how the concentrate slid out of the can drew a humorous response: “SSHHHHHHHHHPLOP.”

In 1994, Coca-Cola introduced Fruitopia, attempting to align with trends, as reported by Tasting Table. Despite a $30-million marketing campaign and features in places like McDonald’s, Fruitopia was discontinued in 2003. Coca-Cola recently announced the end of Minute Maid’s frozen juice concentrates, citing changing consumer preferences. Fox News Business reported the discontinuation.

Five Alive might have vanished from U.S. stores, but its presence persists elsewhere. Coca-Cola offers Five Alive and Fruitopia in Canada. In Nigeria, Five Alive is still available, as noted by Tasting Table. Walmart’s website describes Five Alive as a “nutritious blend of five fruit flavors” providing a “citrus zing that makes you Feel Alive!”
