IndyCar driver Ed Carpenter is gearing up for his 23rd Indianapolis 500 race. Carpenter, who is also a co-owner of his racing team, expressed strong confidence in both his team and car. Additionally, he is looking forward to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington D.C. this August, which promises to bring IndyCar racing to a broad audience.
Another highlight for this year’s Indianapolis 500 is the selection of Indiana Hoosiers head football coach, Curt Cignetti, as the pace car driver. Driving the pace car is more than a ceremonial role; it requires precise speed control so race cars can safely warm up their tires. Cignetti is practicing for this pivotal responsibility, and preparations were shared by IndyCar, including images and videos from the Brickyard.
The pace car for the event is a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. It boasts a 5.5L twin-turbo V8 engine that generates over 1,000 hp to the rear wheels. An additional electric motor contributes another 186 hp to the front axle, providing a total of more than 1,186 hp.
For guidance, Cignetti has been receiving tips from Sarah Fisher, a former IndyCar driver with nine Indianapolis 500 appearances and experience as a pace car driver. Their effort ensures Cignetti is well-prepared for the event, where he will lead the field with the distinctive America 250 paint scheme Corvette.
