Plans to establish a Smithsonian museum dedicated to women’s history on the National Mall faced a significant setback. Disagreements arose after Republican lawmakers included specific language regarding ‘biological women’ and the president’s influence over the museum’s location.
The proposed site for the museum was to be situated west of the Smithsonian Castle. However, the language in the legislation allowed President Donald Trump the option to select an alternative location.
The inclusion of this language has sparked political disputes. These disputes center around transgender rights and reflect Trump’s broader initiative to reshape Washington, D.C. Consequently, a project that enjoyed bipartisan support for over a decade has come to a standstill.
