Pete Alonso made an unfortunate decision during the first game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. The Baltimore Orioles first baseman let a catchable ball fall to the ground, leading to an error and runs for Detroit.
In the fourth inning, Detroit’s Dillon Dingler hit a fly ball toward Alonso. With a runner already on first, Alonso chose to let the ball drop instead of taking a simple out. He misplayed the bounce and made a poor throw to second base, allowing both runners to advance safely. The five-time All-Star received an error for the misplay.
Alonso’s decision could have been praised as clever had it worked, but such risks come with potential downsides.
Despite Alonso’s blunder, Baltimore rallied to win the game 5-3, ending a three-game losing streak. Alonso’s struggles continued at the plate, finishing 0-for-4 in the game. His season stats include 10 home runs and 32 RBIs, but his .224 batting average shows inconsistency.
Alonso joined the Orioles with a significant five-year, $155 million contract in the offseason, earning an average annual salary of $31 million. His performance remains under scrutiny as the season progresses.
