Will Ospreay realized a significant career milestone on Sunday night during the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) event, Double or Nothing, held in New York. In a fierce first-round encounter of the Owen Hart Men’s Tournament, Ospreay faced off against Samoa Joe. The tournament winner will secure a shot at the AEW World Championship at All In, the year’s biggest AEW event, set to take place at Wembley Stadium, England.
In the match, Ospreay took the upper hand from the start by executing an OsCutter, catching Joe by surprise. As the competition progressed, Ospreay unleashed multiple Hidden Blades to clinch the victory. He earned praise for his performance and was asked about his potential to lead AEW should he win the Owen and secure the championship title.
Ospreay expressed confidence in his abilities at the post-match press briefing. “It’s about having the confidence and belief to carry those three letters,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of the ‘E’ representing ‘elite,’ which is a standard he aspires to uphold. “When people speak of elite pro wrestling, there’s no one better on this planet. I hold that belief strongly,” Ospreay added.
I know what I’m capable of. I know what I can do. This place, the motto often repeated is, ‘this is where the best wrestle.’ No, mate. This is where the ‘Billy Goat’ wrestles. I’m more prepared than ever to take that top spot and elevate AEW.
Ospreay has dreamt of wrestling at Wembley Stadium from a young age, while his peers aspired to become soccer players. Overcoming a neck injury and rigorous training with the Death Riders, he returned to form, a journey that frustrated Samoa Joe and led to their clash at Double or Nothing.
Looking forward, Ospreay will meet either Mark Davis or Jack Perry in the semifinals. Meanwhile, in the other half of the men’s bracket, Swerve Strickland defeated Bandido and will face either Claudio Castagnoli or Brody King in the semis. The Owen Cup finals are scheduled for June 28 at the Forbidden Door event.
