Arizona Rollover Crash: Mother’s Indictment on Manslaughter and Drug Charges

An illegal immigrant mother arrested after a fatal rollover crash on Interstate 17 in Arizona has been indicted. Brenda Rivera Estrada, 30, faces charges following the crash that resulted in the death of her nine-year-old daughter. Arizona prosecutors revealed toxicology results allegedly showing methamphetamine and marijuana in her system.

The incident occurred on April 12 near Cactus Road in Phoenix. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced the indictment, connecting Rivera Estrada to the crash. Her daughter was thrown from the SUV and killed, while three other children — an 11-year-old boy, a three-year-old boy, and a one-year-old girl — suffered minor injuries.

Reports indicated Rivera Estrada’s daughter was sharing a seatbelt during the rollover. Witnesses noted she was allegedly driving above the 65 mph speed limit. Authorities suspected impairment after marijuana odors were detected at the scene. A grand jury charged Rivera Estrada with manslaughter, endangerment, drug possession, and drug paraphernalia possession.

Following her arrest, Rivera Estrada moved from ICE custody to the Maricopa County Jail. Prosecutors stated she is held on a $250,000 cash bond. The indictment came after she was initially released from local detention. Federal immigration authorities detained her in relation to the case.

Rivera Estrada, a Mexican national, entered the U.S. through Nogales, Arizona, in 2009. She violated immigration law by remaining beyond her authorized 30-day stay. Prosecutors delayed charges pending further investigation. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized the need for thorough evidence gathering.

The case illustrates ICE’s Criminal Alien Program’s role. Alejandro Almeida, ICE Deputy Field Office Director, highlighted the program’s public safety function.

Rivera Estrada is under custody, awaiting further legal proceedings.
