Martha Stewart has sparked a lively debate on social media with her simple deli-style potato salad recipe. On April 3, her Instagram account shared an older cooking clip in which Stewart demonstrated what she referred to as the “best potato salad.” This uncomplicated recipe uses only six ingredients, comprised of two types of vegetables, two dressings, and two seasonings.
The ingredients include potatoes, one medium white onion, half a cup of white vinegar, and one cup of Hellmann’s mayonnaise. To enhance the flavor, Stewart adds half a teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of sugar. Her straightforward approach to preparing traditional potato salad has stirred discussions due to its minimalistic nature.
Stewart explains her method by first combining onion with white vinegar, salt, and sugar. “Pour this mixture over the potatoes and just slosh it around,” she instructs. Within 10 minutes, the liquid reportedly absorbs back into the potatoes. Subsequently, she completes the recipe by mixing in one cup of Hellmann’s mayonnaise.
To add a personal touch, she shares a moment with her mother, Martha Ruszkowski, who describes the salad as “very good.” Stewart characterizes the dish as “deli-style,” drawing inspiration from her memories of growing up near Jersey City. However, reactions to her recipe have varied online.
Some commenters have critiqued the flavor, suggesting that the salad is too bland for their tastes. A few expressed their preference for more complex recipes, while others found simplicity appealing.”I’m going to make this potato salad,” wrote one user. “It sounds wonderful.”
Stewart is no stranger to food-related debates. Last summer, she weighed in on whether ketchup belongs on hot dogs, stating her preference for the full range of condiments. Previously, she generated humorous discussions on social media with her unique method of enjoying bagels.
