Box Office Performance: ‘Star Wars’ and Other Weekend Releases

A new ‘Star Wars’ movie made a strong debut at the global box office this weekend, drawing substantial audiences but not breaking records. According to Sunday’s studio estimates, ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ garnered $82 million from 4,300 theaters across the U.S. and Canada. By the end of Memorial Day on Monday, the film is projected to reach $102 million domestically and $165 million worldwide.

While these numbers surpassed initial expectations, they remain on the lower end for Disney-era ‘Star Wars’ releases. The movie performed closer to ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ which grossed $103 million over a similar four-day period in 2018. Despite ‘Solo’ being deemed unsuccessful, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ presents a different scenario.

The production budget for ‘Solo’ was around $300 million, whereas ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ was produced for approximately $165 million, excluding marketing expenses. This lower budget makes profitability more achievable, especially with positive audience feedback.

Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White, features prominently in the movie.

The movie received mixed to negative reviews from critics with a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, yet secured an A- CinemaScore from ticket buyers. Boys under 13 rated it highly, giving it an A and a perfect score on PostTrak. Parents also gave a five-star rating.

Directed by Jon Favreau, the movie stars Pedro Pascal as the lead bounty hunter who, alongside his small green companion, embarks on a mission to rescue Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt. The mixed medium of starting as a series and transitioning into a movie, available eventually on Disney+, influences how it might be graded.

The ‘Star Wars’ brand is navigating changes under new leadership by Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who was involved in this production, announced her departure, marking a shift in the franchise. Discussions regarding audience interest suggest a potential cool-off towards ‘Star Wars’ films and raise questions about future releases like ‘Starfighter,’ featuring Ryan Gosling.

Industry analysts, such as Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore, express optimism. ‘The response from audiences and their high scores indicate lasting interest,’ Dergarabedian said.

Elsewhere, ‘Obsession,’ a relationship horror film, saw an unexpected 30% jump in its second weekend, accumulating $22.4 million from 2,655 theaters. Paul Dergarabedian remarked on its uncommon performance and the influence of social media on its success. The film, acquired by Focus Features for $15 million, aims for a $28.2 million total by Monday, placing it second at the box office.

In third place, ‘Michael’ earned $20 million over three days, contributing to a cumulative $782.4 million. ‘Passenger,’ a Paramount Pictures horror release starring Melissa Leo, earned an estimated $8.7 million from 2,534 locations, targeting $10.5 million over four days despite negative reviews.

Opening this weekend, Boots Riley’s ‘I Love Boosters’ grossed $3.7 million. Neon released the film starring Keke Palmer and Demi Moore.

This year’s Memorial Day weekend didn’t compare favorably to last year’s, when releases like Disney’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ led to higher revenues. This year’s total is estimated at $211 million, down from last year’s $330 million.
