At the French Open, Jannik Sinner faced an unexpected setback during a tournament where Carlos Alcaraz was absent. The 24-year-old Italian appeared poised to claim his first French Open title, but his journey ended abruptly in the second round.
Sinner initially led the match against Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, taking the first two sets 3-6, 2-6. However, Cerúndolo turned the tables, winning the next three sets with scores of 7-5, 6-1, 6-1, causing one of the most significant upsets in recent tennis history.
Throughout the match, Sinner had difficulties with the warm conditions, particularly during the third set when his serving was affected. He called for assistance due to cramping, and the 84-degree heat seemed to hinder his performance significantly.
Sinner lost 18 of the following 20 games, ending his stint at Roland-Garros and breaking a 30-match winning streak that began in February. His exit means he missed the chance to complete a career Grand Slam. The absence of world No. 2 Alcaraz had seemed to favor Sinner’s path for a deep tournament run.
Even after winning the first two sets, Sinner was seen as a dominant live betting favorite at -100000 odds. This upset, however, changed the narrative completely.
Juan Manuel Cerúndolo will advance to the third round, scheduled for Saturday. He will compete against either Martín Landaluce or Vít Kopřiva.
