For the first time since 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant change in their coaching staff. Mike McCarthy has been hired as the head coach, following Mike Tomlin’s decision to step down after 19 years at the helm. Team legend Jerome Bettis has expressed enthusiasm about this new direction.
Tomlin leaves an impressive legacy behind. Under his leadership, the Steelers never experienced a losing season and won a Super Bowl, setting high expectations for McCarthy. Bettis shared his thoughts on McCarthy’s arrival, stating, “I think he’s definitely a fundamentals-type coach. He’s won a championship, so he’s a championship-caliber head coach. He knows what success looks like.”
McCarthy’s past success includes coaching the Green Bay Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV against the Steelers in 2011, with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback. Now, he begins a fresh chapter with the Steelers, again with Rodgers under his guidance. Bettis expressed excitement about McCarthy’s leadership qualities, saying, “We’re excited that he’s starting the next chapter of the Steelers organization in terms of a leadership perspective.”
Reflecting on Tomlin’s departure, Bettis acknowledged the length of Tomlin’s tenure with the team, noting, “I was surprised, but in the same breath, I was not. He had been there 19 years. I mean that’s a hell of a run in terms of the timetable.” Tomlin’s decision to step down was unexpected yet understandable given the duration of his leadership.
Bettis, known as “The Bus,” remains grateful for Tomlin’s contributions to the Steelers. As one of the franchise’s greatest running backs and a Pro Football Hall of Fame member, Bettis had a remarkable career, accumulating 13,662 rushing yards, 91 touchdowns, and contributing significantly to the team’s Super Bowl XL victory.
Bettis is set to participate in the American Century Tournament from July 10-12 at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, with coverage available on NBC and Peacock.
