Matt Ryan’s New Role with the Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan, the new president of football for the Atlanta Falcons, is actively working to improve the team’s performance. Ryan, who ranks above the new general manager Ian Cunningham, is the main football executive of the franchise. Notably, the former Falcons quarterback is playing an unexpected role during offseason trainings. According to Marc Raimondi of ESPN, he is providing an extra arm for the offense during OTAs, helping receivers by throwing passes in practice sessions.

Wide receiver Jahan Dotson expressed his surprise at Ryan’s involvement in practice. “I honestly had no idea [he’d be doing that],” Dotson said. “It is pretty cool to have the legend of Atlanta out here, throwing and participating in individual drills. It is always fun, and he is a great guy to pick his brain and learn the game from.”

Currently, the Falcons’ 90-man roster includes four quarterbacks: Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Trevor Siemian, and Jack Strand. Penix and Tagovailoa are set to compete for the quarterback position in training camp. Despite recovering from an ACL injury, Penix, a 2024 first-round pick, is participating in 7-on-7 drills, although he has not been cleared for team sessions.

Ryan’s presence also benefits the Falcons during the quarterback competition. Kevin Stefanski, the new head coach, acknowledges Ryan’s contributions. “Obviously, he helps me every day and assists our players,” Stefanski shared. “The unique history in this city and building, along with Ryan’s experience, adds great value. He can speak to the players from a place of personal experience and success in the sport, which is special.”

After missing the playoffs with an 8-9 record, tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and behind the NFC South-winning Carolina Panthers, the Falcons are looking to become more competitive. Although Ryan won’t be making decisive game throws, his experience and guidance aim to enhance the team’s performance this offseason.
