St. Charles East Wins Sectional Championship with Hannah Wulf’s One-Hit Performance

St. Charles East’s Hannah Wulf recently delivered a striking performance in the Class 4A Bartlett Sectional championship. Despite throwing a no-hitter through five innings, the game felt challenging for her. Wulf recalled, “I didn’t know I was pitching a no-hitter until they got that one hit and someone mentioned it.” Superstitions often keep pitchers from thinking about no-hitters during play.

On that day, Wulf struck out eight batters and allowed only one hit, leading her team to a 1-0 victory over Fremd. Her performance wasn’t flawless; she hit four batters and issued two walks. “When necessary, she was clutch,” said St. Charles East coach Jarod Gutesha. He noted the tight strike zone both pitchers dealt with during the game.

Molly Kanupke, Fremd’s senior pitcher, also performed well, striking out six and conceding five hits and three walks. In a tight 1-0 game, her performance was notable.

Morgan Beers managed to single and scored in the sixth inning for the Saints, who are now set to face Marist in the supersectional. Wulf admitted that the game had its wild moments due to multiple hit-by-pitch incidents.

Gutesha further explained that Wulf’s pitching style often challenges right-handed batters. She throws a curveball that tends to run in on them. “Sometimes even my fastball runs in on right-handers too,” Wulf added, expressing relief that the team secured the win despite some control issues.

Fremd struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities, leaving seven runners stranded in the game. Wulf’s most challenging moment came in the fifth inning when Fremd’s Audrie Corrado hit a single after Wulf hit the leadoff batter. Nonetheless, Wulf struck out the next three batters to escape the inning.

Catcher Hayden Sujack played a crucial role in guiding Wulf through her performance. She called an effective game and maintained focus during tense moments. “Her inside pitches were working great,” Sujack explained. She described Wulf’s curveball as particularly challenging for opponents.

Sujack’s contribution extended beyond her catching duties. She walked twice and recorded a key single in the sixth inning, helping the Saints maintain their momentum. A defensive error by Fremd allowed Morgan Beers to score, resulting in the game’s only run.

Looking forward, Wulf expressed excitement about facing Marist again, acknowledging their strength but remaining confident in her team’s abilities. “It’s a competitive team, and every day is a new opportunity,” she said.
