Victor Wembanyama played a pivotal role in the San Antonio Spurs’ 118-91 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. Wembanyama recorded 28 points and 10 rebounds, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure. This win set the stage for a decisive Game 7 in the battle for the conference title.
In the series finale, the Spurs emerged victorious, defeating the Thunder 111-103 to advance to the NBA Finals. Wembanyama continued to impress, contributing 22 points and seven rebounds. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with a team-high 35 points, but it was not enough to secure a win for Oklahoma City.
Game 7 was a significant moment, marking the 160th winner-take-all game in NBA history and the fifth occurrence this season. The win propels San Antonio to a Finals matchup against the New York Knicks, reviving their 1999 championship rivalry. The Spurs won that previous title in five games.
The Knicks reached the NBA Finals after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Prior to their sweep, New York found themselves trailing 2-1 in their first-round series with Atlanta, but they have since gone 11-0 in playoff games. Most of these victories have been decisive, indicating their strong postseason form.
This year’s NBA Finals will see a new champion crowned, marking the eighth consecutive year that a different franchise will take the title. Previous winners in this streak include Toronto, the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee, Golden State, Denver, Boston, and now potentially either New York or San Antonio.
The Spurs’ return to the NBA Finals is their first since their 2014 championship win against the Miami Heat. Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set to tip off Wednesday in San Antonio.
