Max Domi’s Indefinite Absence Following Surgery Complications

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi recently underwent surgery, causing a hold on his NHL career. The Maple Leafs reported on May 25 that Domi had surgery due to a lingering issue from the 2025-26 season. While details about the surgery remain undisclosed, it was stated that Domi would be out of action indefinitely because of complications from the procedure.

The announcement of Domi’s indefinite absence during the offseason surprised many, given his participation in 80 games for the Leafs last season. In one specific game, Domi is pictured skating with the puck against the Washington Capitals at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on April 8, 2026.

While the team remains silent on the specifics, a report from the Toronto Sun reveals that Domi’s surgery was on his back. This report further claims that post-surgery, Domi was unable to walk, which indicated a significant issue. As a result, his future in the coming season is uncertain.

Interestingly, Domi reportedly opted for his surgeon instead of the one suggested by the Leafs. This choice is not unusual in professional sports. However, the outcome raised alarm as Domi could not walk days after the operation, making his condition a significant concern as noted by Steve Simmons.

In his tenure with the Maple Leafs, Domi has been a cornerstone since joining in 2023. He initially signed a one-year deal and later secured a multi-year contract. Domi participated in a minimum of 74 games each season with Toronto. Last season, he managed to score 12 goals and accumulate 36 points over 80 games. He achieved a career high of 72 points during the 2018-19 season with the Montreal Canadiens. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Domi was a first-round pick by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2013 NHL Draft.
