Blue Jays’ Jesús Sánchez Hit by Ball from Stands, X-rays Clear

Baseball has many risks, and injuries come with the territory. Jesús Sánchez, Toronto Blue Jays right fielder, discovered an unusual hazard when hit by a ball from the stands. It happened during Sunday’s 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.

The incident occurred in the bottom of the sixth inning at Camden Yards. With the Blue Jays trailing 6-0, Sánchez was in right field during a mound visit. He appeared to engage with fans beyond the wall before getting struck in the right wrist by a ball.

The unexpected nature of the event led to confusion on the Peacock broadcast. Jim Palmer commented, “What’re you thinking? I’d fingerprint it right now.” The sight of a ball coming from the stands raised questions for many viewers.

A closer look offers important context. According to several fans and Baltimore Sun reporter Jacob Calvin Meyer, it was an accident. A young fan, around 13 years old, saw Sánchez gesture with his glove as if inviting play. The fan threw the ball, but Sánchez had already turned away.

This incident contrasts with a more positive example from 2012. Then, Tampa Bay Rays infielder Elliot Johnson played catch with fans following a Twitter exchange. It was a heartwarming story highlighting sports’ joy.

The Orioles responded by identifying and removing the fan involved, pending investigation. Toronto Blue Jays confirmed Sánchez’s injury was not serious. He sustained a bruised right wrist, and precautionary X-rays were clear.

Sánchez left the game after going 1-for-2. Yohendrick Piñango replaced him in right field. Despite the scare, the news was positive for Sánchez and the team.

Fans should remember to be cautious before engaging with players. Ensure the player is aware and ready, keeping safety in mind.
