Delegates at the Minnesota Republican Party’s convention voted for a moment of silent prayer for Derek Chauvin. Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was convicted of murdering George Floyd. This event occurred six years after the incident sparked a nationwide discussion about policing and race.
The event, held in Duluth, Minnesota, drew strong criticism from Democrats. They accused Republicans of showing disrespect to the courts and to George Floyd’s memory. In recent years, some conservatives have attempted to change the narrative surrounding Floyd’s killing. Some have also pushed for a presidential pardon for Mr. Chauvin’s federal conviction.
A delegate proposed the moment of silence during a morning session. This delegate described Mr. Chauvin as deserving a state retrial and a federal pardon. Local news outlet, The Minnesota Reformer, recorded the delegate’s remarks, though the delegate’s identity remains unclear.
When a voice vote was called for a moment of silence or prayer, many delegates loudly expressed support. State Representative Danny Nadeau, during his presiding over the session, stated that the moment lasted only a few seconds. He had previously advised the delegate against pursuing the motion.
