Josh Turek, a Paralympic gold medalist and state legislator, secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in Iowa. The Associated Press reported his victory on Tuesday over a progressive opponent in a race emphasizing anti-establishment themes within the party.
Mr. Turek defeated Zach Wahls, also a state lawmaker. Wahls gained national attention in 2011 for a speech at the Iowa Capitol supporting his lesbian parents. Running as a self-proclaimed “prairie populist,” 47-year-old Turek positioned himself as a seasoned candidate who could appeal to independents and Republicans, particularly in a state where President Trump won three times.
“I outperformed the top of the ticket by Trump by 50 percent, more than any other Democrat in the state,” Turek stated during a debate last month, emphasizing his electability.
He is set to compete against Representative Ashley Hinson, who covers the northwest part of Iowa. The Senate Leadership Fund, a major Republican super PAC, has already pledged at least $29 million to support Hinson’s campaign. This funding indicates the potential competitiveness of this year’s contest compared to previous elections.
Democrats are increasingly optimistic about their chances in Iowa. Despite Republican control of the state’s congressional delegation, the governor’s office, and both legislative chambers, they see an opportunity for change.
