The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has announced an investigation into the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices at Arizona State University (ASU). This comes after viral videos suggested the university may have denied equal treatment to students based on race, color, or national origin.
According to the DOJ’s statement, there are allegations that ASU engaged in discriminatory practices while attempting to conceal these actions from federal authorities. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon emphasized the commitment to preventing illegal discrimination in universities. “No student should be denied access to opportunities or resources because of race, color, or national origin,” she stated.
ASU, one of the largest universities nationwide, receives significant federal funding. Federal law mandates that institutions like ASU provide equal opportunities to all students regardless of race, color, or national origin. A DOJ investigation will assess whether ASU’s DEI policies result in illegal discrimination in areas such as admissions, recruitment, and educational support.
An ASU representative responded, affirming that the university adheres to federal laws and does not engage in discriminatory practices in admissions. “Such actions would violate both state and university policies,” the spokesperson noted.
The investigation will consider the impact of ASU’s DEI policies on the student body. Meanwhile, the university acknowledged the DOJ’s announcement and the referenced viral videos but refrained from commenting specifically on the videos. ASU emphasized that these recordings do not feature authorized representatives of the university.
The Justice Department clarified that the investigation is ongoing, with no conclusions reached at this stage.
