Quentin Tarantino Criticizes Modern Movies, Praises Rare Exceptions

Quentin Tarantino has expressed disappointment with the state of contemporary cinema. The acclaimed director of ‘Pulp Fiction’ shared his thoughts in an essay for Sight & Sound magazine. He lamented the lack of films that captivate him fully.

Tarantino criticized many modern movies for their flaws, audience pandering, and poor casting. He described these films as products of a ‘flavorless sausage factory’ once known as Hollywood. He argued that current films fail to inspire the enthusiasm he once felt for cinema.

“Flaws, implausibilities, audience pandering, miscast performers or just plain stupid s— usually torpedo every new movie,” he wrote. “These days, the entire concept of what is a movie is more inclined to inspire contempt in me than generosity.”

Despite his criticism, Tarantino acknowledged some recent films he enjoyed. Among these were the 2021 rendition of ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Chapters 1 and 2 (2024). Yet, he admitted that few have stirred his passion the way films did in the past.

One recent exception is ‘The Rip’ (2026), a Netflix release starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Tarantino praised ‘The Rip’ for its engaging plot and direction. He highlighted the film’s skillful execution, including its cast, cinematography, and screenplay.

Tarantino revealed his plans to direct only one more film before retiring. Frustrations with the industry’s direction and how quickly films move to home platforms influence his decision. At the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, he questioned the nature of modern cinema:

“What … is a movie now? … something that plays in theaters for a token release for four … weeks, and by the second week you can watch it on television?”

Though Tarantino plans to step away from directing films, he continues to explore other creative outlets. He announced a ‘swashbuckling comedy’ play titled ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’ for London’s West End. Moreover, he penned the screenplay for a ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ follow-up, directed by David Fincher and starring Brad Pitt, set for Netflix release.

Despite his dissatisfaction with contemporary cinema, Tarantino has shared appreciation for select films. He expressed admiration for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story,’ praising their cinematic spectacles. His top 20 films of the 21st century, however, include few entries from recent years.
