Senate Republicans opposed the permanent elimination of President Donald Trump’s $2 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund. This fund has drawn criticism within their ranks. Both Republicans and Democrats rejected an amendment from Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.). The amendment aimed to stop the fund from returning and redirect the money to the nation’s fraud fund.
Although Senate Democrats dislike the fund, nearly all resisted diverting the money. Twelve Republicans supported the amendment, indicating dissatisfaction with the fund and the administration’s plans for it. The amendment’s failure might curb efforts to officially end the fund. This follows delays during a marathon Senate session to pass the GOP’s $70 billion immigration enforcement package.
Sen. Thom Tillis stated he would refuse to back the budget reconciliation package if it included $1 billion for Trump. The fund, announced through a settlement between the Trump family and the IRS, faced opposition. Republicans worried that without restrictions, those convicted of assaulting police during the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot might access it.
Despite Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s assurances against pursuing the fund, doubts persist. Trump expressed different sentiments in the Oval Office. He remarked, ‘I’d have to ask the lawyers. I don’t know,’ suggesting uncertainty about the fund’s future.
Trump described the fund as ‘a beautiful thing’ and essential. Tillis questioned the administration’s reluctance to formally end the fund. He stressed the political risks for members without clear termination. ‘Otherwise, you’re exposing every one of our members,’ he emphasized.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) criticized the fund alongside Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.). Cassidy also proposed an amendment to prevent the fund’s return. Republicans arguing against the fund assert there is nothing in the current bill regarding it. They suggested addressing the issue if Trump attempts to revive the fund.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said, ‘Well, then address it if he tries to do it, if it’s unpopular. People can address it when it happens.’
