Public Poll Ranks Top 100 Living American Songwriters

The New York Times, known for its comprehensive coverage of various topics, recently released its readers’ choice list of the top 100 living American songwriters. This came after the newspaper published its own curated list in April, compiled from data provided by over 250 music insiders and six of its critics. However, some readers expressed dissatisfaction with the initial list, prompting the Times to invite the public to vote on their favorites.

In response, the Times launched a poll, urging readers to share their opinions. Participants submitted more than 25,000 ballots, which resulted in approximately 12,000 different nominees. The final list was narrowed down to 100 songwriters based on these votes.

Leading the list is Bob Dylan, followed by Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen. Carole King and Billy Joel complete the top five. According to the Times, Bob Dylan was included on a third of all ballots cast.

Several musicians who weren’t on the original list now enjoy recognition thanks to the readers’ votes. These include R.E.M. at position 25, Jack White at 49, Pearl Jam at 52, Beck at 56, and Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails at 83. These artists are celebrated within their genres, and their inclusion reflects the audience’s appreciation despite being overlooked in the initial list.
