Roland Garros Courts
Roland Garros’ clay courts are notable for their unique composition. The distinctive red clay is sourced from a single factory in Oise, north of Paris. The factory produces around 2,000 tonnes of bricks annually for construction. These bricks are crushed into fine sand, with particles less than a tenth of a millimeter, ideal for tennis. 80 tonnes of clay are used for the French Open courts, providing a surface where players can slide effectively.
Stade Roland Garros Overview
The stadium complex, named after aviation pioneer Roland Garros, is situated in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. It consists of 20 courts, notably Court Philippe Chatrier, which seats 15,000. Court Philippe Chatrier, built in 1928, was named after tennis legends known as the ‘Four Musketeers’: Jean Borotra, Jacques Brugnon, Henri Cochet, and Rene Lacoste. Each section of the stadium honors these historic players.
