The tragic death of actor James Handy has led to murder charges against Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend. The incident occurred outside Handy’s home in Tarzana, resulting in charges that could lead to Gledhill facing 26 years to life in prison if convicted.
Nathan J. Hochman, the Los Angeles County District Attorney, expressed deep concern over the incident. “No one should have their life end in such a manner,” he stated, referring to Handy’s violent death in his own front yard. Handy, known for his roles in films such as “Jumanji” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” had the right to enjoy the later years of his life surrounded by loved ones, according to Hochman.
Hochman further emphasized the importance of every life lost to violence, declaring a need for the responsible party to be held accountable. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office released a statement confirming Gledhill’s charges, including a special allegation related to the use of a deadly weapon, specifically a knife.
The stabbing happened early Wednesday when officers responded to an emergency call. The call, made by Gledhill himself, conveyed a chilling message: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Upon arrival, officers found Handy, 81, unconscious with a stab wound to the chest. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, Handy was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Gledhill identified himself to officers at the scene, leading to his arrest. Police confirmed that Gledhill resided at the Tarzana residence with his mother, who was Handy’s partner. After his arrest, Gledhill was booked into Van Nuys Jail with a bail set at $2 million.
James Handy’s career spanned decades, with appearances in productions like “CSI: NY” and the ABC TV movie “False Arrest.” His death is a significant loss to the entertainment industry and to those who knew him personally.
