At least 49 individuals lost their lives due to dehydration after being stranded in the Sahara Desert of northern Niger. The incident occurred when a truck transporting them broke down, leaving them without water for several days, as reported by Niger’s regional authorities.
The victims were returning from a religious festival in Mali. The truck halted over 80 kilometers west of Assamaka, near Mali and Algeria. The survivors, two men, managed to walk over 50 kilometers to find water and eventually reach Assamaka, where they informed authorities.
A team dispatched by Agadez Region Governor Gen. Ibra Boulama Issa found that the truck had been traveling for days from Talhandek, around 300 kilometers from the Nigerien border. The precise cause of the breakdown and the duration of the passengers’ ordeal were unclear.
“On the spot, the findings were particularly disturbing. Dozens of lifeless bodies were found under the immobile truck and in its surroundings,” noted the governorate.
Photos from the scene depicted bodies in the desert alongside clothes and belongings. Devoid of water and unable to fix the vehicle despite efforts, the travelers were trapped in harsh conditions. Extreme temperatures and scarce resources made survival highly unlikely.
The 49 victims were laid to rest in mass graves at the site. Officials described the burial process as a “particularly delicate and emotionally exhausting task” for those involved.
