Bill Clinton, a Democrat, served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. Born on August 19, 1946, as William Jefferson Blythe III, his early life was marked by tragedy. His father, William Jefferson Blythe II, passed away in a car accident before Clinton was born. His mother, Virginia Cassidy Blythe, left him with his grandparents to attend nursing school.
Clinton’s academic journey was notable. He graduated from Georgetown University, received a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University, and earned a law degree from Yale University in 1973. In 1975, he married Hillary Rodham.
His political career began in Arkansas. After an unsuccessful congressional run in 1974, he was elected attorney general in 1976. In 1978, Clinton became the governor of Arkansas but faced a defeat for re-election. He and Hillary welcomed their daughter, Chelsea, in 1980. Four years later, Clinton recaptured the governorship.
Clinton’s national political aspirations took shape as he launched a campaign for the presidency against Republican George H.W. Bush. In 1992, Clinton and his running mate, Albert Gore Jr., emerged victorious, defeating Bush and independent candidate Ross Perot. Clinton secured re-election in 1996, defeating Republican Bob Dole and Perot once more.
His presidency saw significant achievements, including high homeownership rates, the creation of 22 million jobs, and low unemployment. However, his tenure faced controversy. An affair with Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern, led to his impeachment by the House of Representatives on December 19, 1998, for perjury and obstruction of justice.
Following his presidency, Clinton maintained an active presence in politics. He supported Democratic candidates, notably Hillary Clinton’s 2008 and 2016 presidential campaigns. He has authored several books, such as “My Life,” “Back to Work,” and “Citizen: My Life After the White House,” reflecting on his experiences and contributions.
Bill Clinton is also a grandfather to Charlotte, Aidan, and Jasper.
