The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. on a street close to Schmidt’s home. Philadelphia police reported finding Schmidt with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead at 1:47 a.m.

According to his father, Bill Schmidt, Billy had been returning from watching the NBA Finals with friends at a bar.
