6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Near Cuba Felt in Florida

A magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred off Cuba’s northwest coast, affecting parts of Florida on Monday afternoon. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake about 65 miles west-northwest of Mantua, Cuba, located west of Havana.

The USGS reported light shaking in Florida, where such seismic activity is rare. They posted on X, mentioning the unusual occurrence of earthquakes being felt in the region. Residents from Tampa, Orlando, and South Florida noted the tremors.

Miami city officials acknowledged the earthquake’s seismic activity. They received numerous service calls related to the incident. Miami Fire-Rescue responded to each report. Officials confirmed no major injuries or property damage occurred, and all calls were resolved without issue.

Following the earthquake, the National Weather Service in Miami reassured residents that there was no tsunami threat in South Florida. Additional information regarding the situation has not been released.

Previous Earthquake Experiences in Florida

Earthquakes rarely impact Florida, but similar events have been felt before. In January 2020, a significant magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck south of Cuba near Jamaica. It was felt in Miami and other parts of South Florida.

A resident in Aventura described feeling light-headed as the ground shifted, while a coworker questioned whether the building was moving.

This recent earthquake highlights the region’s occasional susceptibility to distant seismic events despite its geographical stability.
