The southeastern region of the United States is experiencing a critical shortage of physicians. This situation results in patients encountering longer wait times for medical care.
Urgency in Emergency Situations
In February, a child in a rural North Carolina middle school had a severe allergic reaction with no previous medical history. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived quickly. At the parent’s request, they transported the child to a major medical center in Durham, located over 30 minutes away.
While on the way, the child’s vital signs deteriorated. The paramedics were forced to make a decision. They decided to redirect to the nearest hospital in Roxboro, only a few minutes from their location.
Upon arrival at the emergency department, the child needed several medications and supportive interventions to stabilize her condition and ensure her recovery.
