Steve Hilton Faces Xavier Becerra in California Gubernatorial Race

Republican Steve Hilton is preparing for a general-election challenge against former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Hilton aims to be California’s first Republican governor in 15 years. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is term-limited and cannot run again, creating an open seat. Republicans intend to seize this opportunity, with the party largely uniting behind Hilton. They hope that concerns over illegal immigration and crime may drive Hilton to victory.

The Decision Desk projected Hilton’s successful advancement to the general election on Tuesday night. President Donald Trump expressed approval on Truth Social regarding Hilton’s reported progress.

According to the Associated Press, Hilton held second place with 25.1% of the votes, trailing Democrat Tom Steyer, who had 22.4%. With 83% of votes counted by 12:21 a.m. Tuesday, the race for a second candidate was yet to be officially called.

Steve Hilton’s Chances Against Becerra

Polls suggest Hilton could be competitive, though a challenging path lies ahead. A SurveyUSA poll shortly before the election showed Hilton and Steyer both at 20%, with Becerra at 17%. An Emerson College poll placed Hilton in third with 21%, following Becerra’s 28% and Steyer’s 22%.

With the primary concluded, Democrats might unify behind one candidate, likely widening their lead over Hilton. Despite consolidated Republican support, registered Democrats in California far outnumber Republicans, posing a significant hurdle for Hilton. Overcoming this requires attracting independents and Democratic voters.

Hilton’s Advantages

Hilton’s background as a Fox News host has made him a known figure with a distinct ideological stance. His campaign focuses on reducing taxes, tackling crime, and opposing policies he deems as Democratic failures. Trump has endorsed him, stating Hilton could rejuvenate California and vowing assistance if Hilton wins. Additionally, Hilton has promised to investigate Newsom over alleged fraud if elected.

He emphasized this position at a recent campaign event, highlighting the importance of securing a top-two spot to bring change. Although Hilton benefits from Republican unity, converting non-Republican voters remains crucial due to a significant Democratic advantage among registered voters.

The Last Republican Governor

Arnold Schwarzenegger was the last Republican elected as California governor, securing reelection in 2006. At that time, Republican and Democratic voter registrations were closer in numbers. Current figures show over 10 million Democrats compared to only about 5 million Republicans.

Campaign Fundraising

Hilton has raised over $7 million for his campaign, with nearly half of donations received after April 19, indicating growing support. His finances surpass Becerra, who has garnered just over $6 million, with significant contributions post-April 19. Steyer leads in fundraising, amassing over $160 million.

Hilton’s strategy hinges on expanding his coalition to include independents and occasional Democratic voters. Success depends on broadening his appeal to put forth a formidable challenge.

Becerra in the General Election

Becerra has advanced to California’s November gubernatorial election. A Democrat and former state attorney general, he has leveraged his public service tenure as a balanced opposition to Trump. His campaign emphasizes crucial issues like housing affordability and energy costs.

A victory for Becerra would be historic, potentially making him California’s first Latino governor in over a century. While lauded for his experience, Becerra faces inquiries about his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and other responsibilities in the Biden administration.
