Rob Reiner’s son, Nick Reiner, is requesting access to money from a trust fund his parents set up. He says these funds are necessary for his defense against charges of their murder. Filed in a Los Angeles County court, Nick’s civil attorneys argue that trustee Paul R. Kanin has withheld the funds without legal grounds, leaving Nick in need.
The petition highlights that Nick loved his parents and is devastated by their deaths. However, it stresses that the trust litigation is separate from the criminal charges he faces and reaffirms his presumption of innocence. The trust was supposed to distribute portions of its assets to him at ages 30 and 35. Nick states that he has not received the funds due at 30.
Nick was charged after the deaths of Rob Reiner, director, and Michele Singer Reiner, photographer, who were found murdered in their Brentwood home. Arrested soon after, Nick pleaded not guilty to the charges. High-profile lawyer Alan Jackson initially represented him but withdrew for undisclosed reasons.
The new petition also reveals that Nick’s siblings agreed to pay for Jackson’s representation but later retracted. Jackson has indicated his readiness to return if funds are accessible. The trust documentation implies Nick should have already received half of the funds, with the remainder allocated at 35. Nick claims that his current defense needs justify early access to the funds at 35.
The trustee has cited concerns about Nick’s competence as one reason for withholding the funds, despite these not affecting mandatory payments. The trust contains at least $1.5 million, yet Kanin has not clarified the exact value. No comments were available from Kanin regarding this situation.
The case proceedings are advancing slowly, with a pretrial hearing marked for September. The possibility of the death penalty is under consideration, though not finalized by District Attorney Nathan Hochman. Details on motives and the case remain undisclosed due to court orders and minimal information leaks.
Jackson maintains Nick’s innocence under California law. Meanwhile, Jake Reiner remarked on the tragedy’s overwhelming nature. Rob Reiner, known for films like “This is Spinal Tap” and “When Harry Met Sally,” had been married to Michele for 36 years. His work had a significant impact on 1980s and ’90s cinema.
