Physician Shortage in Southeastern Region Impacts Patient Care

The southeastern region is grappling with a critical shortage of physicians. This shortage has resulted in patients experiencing extended wait times for medical care.

Last February, an incident highlighted the severity of the situation. In a rural North Carolina middle school, a child with no known allergies suffered a severe allergic reaction. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded immediately. At the parent’s request, they began transport to a larger medical facility in Durham, located over 30 minutes away.

During the journey, the child’s condition rapidly deteriorated. The paramedics then faced a crucial decision. They rerouted to the nearest hospital, just a few minutes away in Roxboro. Upon arrival at the emergency department, the child required extensive medical intervention, including multiple medications and supportive care, to stabilize her condition.
