Idris Elba has expressed a pragmatic view regarding the possibility of him being cast as James Bond.
In a discussion with British GQ, the 53-year-old actor addressed longstanding rumors about him replacing Daniel Craig as 007, delving into the topic of race and audience preferences. Elba stated, “I’ve always felt that it’s not a realistic thing. James Bond was written how he was written for a reason. But I was complimented by it. And also, in realistic terms, some markets just don’t go for that. Bond is big all over the world. And [audiences] won’t [all] go for a Black male, an African male, playing Bond. That’s not what they like in their culture. Period.”
Elba’s comments highlight a debate on maintaining the authenticity of the Bond character. He further added, “Bond is so unrealistic, so a hint of reality is good, but let’s not try and make it woke. I think you’ve got to be pure to what it is: escapism. Don’t try and answer the world’s taste. Just be Bond.”
Earlier in 2023, at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Elba mentioned the persistent talks about him stepping into the iconic role. He commented, “You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with ‘J’ and ends with ‘B,’ but I’m not going to be that guy. I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am.”
Further explaining his stance, Elba told UK’s Esquire, “If we spent half the time not talking about the differences and the similarities between us, the entire planet would have a shift in the way we deal with each other,” emphasizing the hindrance caused by society’s obsession with race.
Daniel Craig was the last actor to play James Bond, with his character’s story arc concluding in the 2021 film “No Time to Die.” Elba addressed the backlash his views received through a statement on X, asserting his identity, “There isn’t a soul on this earth that can question whether I consider myself a BLACK MAN or not.” He further commented, “Being an ‘actor’ is a profession, like being an ‘architect,’ they are not defined by race. However, If YOU define your work by your race, that is your Perogative (sic). Ah lie?”
Amazon MGM Studios has recently provided an update regarding the search for the next James Bond. They stated that while specific details in the casting process remain undisclosed, they are eager to share news when appropriate.
