Edmonton Oilers Face Criticism Over Potential Hiring of Mike Babcock

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly considering drastic measures to secure a Stanley Cup victory before star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl decide to leave. The team is set to hire Mike Babcock, a coach whose past conduct has sparked controversy.

Mike Babcock resigned as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023, only ten weeks into his tenure amid allegations of inappropriate conduct toward players. News of this potential hiring has caused an uproar among Oilers fans, who have taken to social media to express their disapproval.

“The NHLPA has asked the NHL to move forward with an investigation into the allegations Mike Babcock invaded players’ privacy during his time in Columbus,”

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, if Babcock gets hired, an investigation by the NHL will precede his appointment. This inquiry follows accusations that Babcock invaded players’ privacy during his time in Columbus by examining personal photos on their phones.

The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun stated that the NHL awaits Edmonton’s decision. If the Oilers proceed with hiring Babcock, the league will initiate its investigation, as requested by the NHLPA.

This investigation could influence Edmonton’s decision or result in potential NHL sanctions against Babcock before he starts with the Oilers.

Babcock’s controversial coaching methods include accusations of bullying Detroit Red Wings player Johan Franzen, instructing Mitch Marner to rate teammates at the Toronto Maple Leafs, and benching players like Mike Modano and Mike Commodore due to personal disputes.
