The Chicago White Sox are in first place in the American League Central, a position they haven’t held this late in the season since 2021. Right-handed starter Davis Martin expressed his enthusiasm, noting the stark contrast with previous seasons where the team struggled significantly. “Every time you come through the parking lot and know that you have a chance to win the game, that really just fires you up,” he stated, underscoring the team’s rejuvenated spirit.
The White Sox achieved a significant victory against the Atlanta Braves, who have the best record in Major League Baseball, by securing a 2-1 win on Wednesday at Rate Field. Martin, boasting a 9-2 record, delivered a strong performance with six shutout innings, six hits allowed, and six strikeouts. He outperformed Chris Sale, the 2024 Cy Young Award winner and former White Sox pitcher, who surrendered two runs in 5 2/3 innings.
“I gave myself a little bit of time to look at the scoreboard, and they had our career stats,” Martin remarked. “They had mine at 250 punchouts and he had 3,000 or 2,000 or something like that. Some crazy big number. And I was just like, ‘man, this is fun.’ This is who you want to play against and this is why you want to be in the big leagues.”
With this victory, the White Sox (36-31) moved half a game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians. Key contributions came from rookie Braden Montgomery, who hit two doubles, and Derek Hill and Luisangel Acuna, who each drove in runs. Montgomery, who generated buzz with a walk-off home run in his debut, impressed with a double from both sides of the plate against talented pitchers like Sale and James Karinchak.
Montgomery highlighted the challenge and motivation of facing a Hall of Fame-level player like Sale, stating, “You’ve really got to find the balance between blocking out that you are playing against a Hall of Famer and locking in and trying to put together quality at-bats to get a win.”
Unfortunately, shortstop Colson Montgomery missed his second straight game due to back tightness but plans to return on Thursday. He noted, “It’s nothing to worry about. We’re just trying to get ahead of it.” Despite the setback, he expressed excitement for his teammate’s performances, mentioning the “Fear of Missing Out” during Braden’s remarkable home run.
Braden Montgomery, who shares a strong bond with Colson, dismissed any suggestions of rivalry, emphasizing their brotherly relationship, “He’s like my brother. That’s how we go about that relationship. We’re good friends.”
Meanwhile, the series saw some compelling family dynamics for the Acuña family. Ronald Jr., a Braves outfielder, and his younger brother Luisangel, a White Sox infielder, faced each other on the field. In their second inning Tuesday, a playful moment occurred when Luisangel tagged out Ronald Jr. on a stolen base attempt. However, Ronald Jr. suffered a hamstring injury in the fifth inning and was placed on the 10-day injured list.
Luisangel contributed significantly on Wednesday with two hits and an RBI and attempted a bold steal of third base, though he was tagged out at home later in the inning. This game reinforced the athletic prowess and competitive spirit within the Acuña family.
