British Defense Secretary John Healey Resigns Over Funding Dispute

On Thursday, John Healey, the British Defense Secretary, announced his resignation due to disagreements over defense funding. Healey accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of inadequate investment in British defense, leaving the country vulnerable. In his resignation letter, Healey expressed concern that the lack of necessary funding would compromise the readiness of British Forces and increase risks for military personnel.

Previously, Healey and Starmer had discussed increasing military spending to 3.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP) by 2030. However, Starmer’s Defense Investment Plan intends to raise spending to only 2.68% of GDP by that time. This discrepancy prompted Healey’s decision to step down, as he felt his position would compel him to make decisions that might endanger the country’s safety.

Healey shared his resignation letter on social media, outlining his stance and the reasons for his departure. He emphasized the need for a robust Defense Investment Plan that aligns with current global threats, a sentiment he believed was not being met under Starmer’s proposal.

The story continues to develop, and further updates are expected.
