Graham Platner has criticized Collins, attacking her past decisions, including her vote for the Iraq War and her support of aspects of President Donald Trump’s policies. He has accused her of being corrupt like the establishment she serves. Despite this, Collins argues that her legislative results for Maine outweigh angry rhetoric. Her record includes securing $1.5 billion over five years and substantial rural healthcare funding.
However, the election remains heated. Schumer’s attempts to unseat Collins persist, despite Platner not being his preferred candidate. Schumer suggests Collins is vulnerable due to her alignment with Trump and her vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, which he claims contributed to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Reflecting on past campaigns, Collins notes significant financial efforts from Democrats to defeat her, as seen six years ago. She insists that her record is often misrepresented and highlights her bipartisan voting record, which includes votes for justices like Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.
While President Trump acknowledged Collins was not his ally, he called her a “sane woman,” sparking laughter from Collins. She emphasizes her independence in decision-making, considering each issue’s impact on Maine rather than opposing policies due to partisan pressures.
