Alabama Public Service Commission Runoff Sparks Debate Over Solar Power

The Alabama Public Service Commission has become a focal point in the upcoming runoff primaries. This election centers on data centers and energy concerns. Recently, solar power has emerged as a controversial issue.

Jim Zeigler, known for his political activism since the 1970s, is highlighting data centers and solar power as significant threats in the Republican runoff election. Historically, he campaigned against Bull Connor, a notorious figure in the civil rights era. Zeigler successfully removed Connor from the commission that oversees Alabama’s utilities in the early 1970s, later securing a seat himself.

Currently, the commission’s role has gained importance due to debates over artificial intelligence data centers. On Tuesday, Zeigler, now 78, aims to position these centers and renewable energy as adversaries.

At a recent Elmore County Republican Party event, Zeigler warned about the impact of data centers and solar farms. He argues that claims of economic benefits from these projects are misleading.

The relationship between data centers and solar power varies depending on perspective. Both Republicans and Democrats worry that data centers consume excessive power and water, resources that citizens need. Solar power, championed globally, faces opposition from figures such as President Trump.
