Montana Senate Race Faces Democratic Division

The race for a Senate seat in Montana has become contentious with three candidates in the running: Alani Bankhead, a Democrat, Seth Bodnar, an independent, and Kurt Alme, a Republican. The situation has raised concerns among Democrats about splitting the vote between Ms. Bankhead and Mr. Bodnar, benefiting the Republicans.

During a recent news conference, Ms. Bankhead declared she would stay in the race, opposing calls for her to step aside for Mr. Bodnar, whom many perceived as a stronger contender in the Republican-dominated state. Her refusal ensured a continuation of the competitive three-way battle.

Ms. Bankhead explicitly rejected the idea of withdrawing, mentioning that if she believed another candidate was better, she would have done so. However, she mentioned that Mr. Bodnar was not a preferable replacement, showing her determination to stay in the race.

The press conference took place at the University of Montana, where Mr. Bodnar had been president. Ms. Bankhead criticized Mr. Bodnar for his past administration’s handling of a sex-discrimination lawsuit. She argued these issues reflected poorly on his leadership, insisting he was not the right candidate.

Mr. Bodnar had faced scrutiny during his tenure over claims of maintaining a male-dominated environment, though he denied these allegations. He stated that he promoted many women during his leadership and significantly increased the number of female deans.
