JD Vance’s latest memoir, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” offers an in-depth look at his evolving political and personal beliefs. Released as Vance positions himself for a possible 2028 presidential run, the book delves into his past remarks and current philosophies.
Reflecting on Past Remarks
Vance openly admits to regretting his past description of some Democrats as “childless cat ladies.” A comment he made in 2021 included Vice President Kamala Harris in that label, suggesting they lacked a ‘direct stake’ in the nation’s future. This sparked significant backlash, particularly after he became Donald J. Trump’s running mate in 2024. In his memoir, Vance acknowledges the words were meant to provoke rather than inform.
“The comment caused two firestorms: the first when I made it, the second years later during a political campaign,” Vance writes. “Aside from enraging a great number of people, it had the added benefit of distracting from the actual point I wanted to make, which was that our society is becoming pathologically hostile to having kids.”
Exploring Faith and Ambition
The book sheds light on Vance’s brief departure from Christianity and his journey to embracing Catholicism. With an eye on the future, he incorporates his religious beliefs into a vision for the United States centered around Christian values.
Political Philosophy and Future Plans
As the 2028 presidential race looms, Vance uses this memoir to begin articulating his political ideology. He connects his personal faith and professional ambitions, hinting at a transformative agenda for America’s future.
