A Republican aiming for the Senate, Rep. Kevin Hern from Oklahoma, questions why a significant voter ID and citizenship verification bill remains stalled. Hern secured a primary victory recently, emphasizing that voters are asking if Congress will pass the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. ‘They keep telling us we need to work on the SAVE Act,’ Hern shared prior to the primary Election Day.
The bill faces opposition in the Senate, with Democrats pledging to block it. Some Republicans have also opposed it. ‘I don’t understand why Republican senators aren’t supporting it,’ Hern stated, acknowledging Democratic resistance to the legislation. Hern has served in the House for five terms and has risen to the fourth-highest House GOP leadership role.
Hern’s Senate candidacy follows the nomination of fellow Oklahoman Markwayne Mullin for a leadership position in the Department of Homeland Security by former President Trump. The race sees Hern gaining endorsements from senators and Trump, who praised him as a strong supporter of the MAGA movement.
Oklahoma, known for its support of Trump, presents a favorable ground for Hern. Trump has consistently won the state and its counties in past elections. Despite the advantage, Hern remains committed to campaigning actively. His business acumen, owning 24 McDonald’s franchises in Oklahoma, earned him the nickname ‘McCongressman.’
‘I respect the idea of work,’ Hern expressed, highlighting his dedication and preparation for the Senate race. ‘The president endorsed me because of the work I’ve done over the years.’
If victorious in November, Hern is open to pursuing leadership roles in the Senate GOP. ‘I’ve learned that starting early and working diligently positions you for success,’ he noted. ‘We’ll see what roles become available.’
