An aerial photo taken from a commercial plane descending into Washington, DC recently highlighted several renovations across the city. Captured on June 16, the image shows distinct features, including the algae-laden Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the damaged White House South Lawn post-UFC Freedom 250 fight, and a covered area on the National Mall with an enigmatic ‘8647’ inscription, prompting a U.S. Park Police investigation.
The Department of the Interior completed work on the Reflecting Pool earlier in the month. Unfortunately, the result is an algae-green hue, unlike the preferred ‘American Flag Blue’ chosen by previous President Donald Trump for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Efforts to remedy the algae situation are underway. On June 17, workers applied hydrogen peroxide to the pool to curtail the algae growth. However, by Wednesday, parts of the pool retained the green appearance.
On another front, the White House announced on June 16 that ScottsMiracle-Gro, alongside the National Park Service, will refurbish the South Lawn’s grass damaged during the UFC event on June 14. ScottsMiracle-Gro has pledged $1 million for this restoration project.
USA TODAY reached out to the National Park Service seeking further details concerning the National Mall’s repairs after the noticed discoloration and written message.
