Critics and Supporters React to Trump’s Proposed Iran Deal

During a bilateral meeting, President Donald Trump described the U.S.-Iran deal as ‘a wall to a nuclear weapon’ and one of the ‘dumbest’ deals. While Fox News’ Harris Faulkner covered key points of the proposal, there was a range of reactions from Trump’s supporters and critics.

Details of the Proposed Deal

The proposed 14-point framework agreement, presented on Wednesday, calls for an immediate ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Key elements include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting the U.S. naval blockade, granting temporary waivers on Iranian oil exports, and access to frozen Iranian assets. It also promises to negotiate a final agreement within 60 days. An economic reconstruction package valued at over $300 billion is part of the proposal, along with Iran’s renewed intention not to pursue nuclear weapons.

However, critics argue the agreement does not address dismantling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure or restricting Tehran’s ballistic missile program and its proxy groups like Hezbollah.

Sharp Divisions Among Supporters and Critics

Various supporters of Trump expressed strong criticism of the deal. Will Chamberlain of the Article III Project labeled it as ‘absolutely terrible’ and argued it gives Iran financial benefits without requisite commitments. Conservative radio host Mark Levin criticized the memorandum, saying it surrenders U.S. leverage too soon.

AG Hamilton, a conservative commentator, questioned the sincerity of Iran’s promises, noting the financial relief provided despite Iran retaining its nuclear and missile programs.Should have had Kamala Harris negotiate it, they wrote as criticism on X.

Miles Taylor, a former Department of Homeland Security official, termed the memorandum ‘pathetic,’ calling it a humiliating moment in U.S. diplomatic history.

Diverse Opinions and Expectations

Prominent figures like JD Vance and Erick Erickson shared similar sentiments, considering the deal a form of ‘American surrender.’ Meanwhile, former Vice President Mike Pence and former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley criticized it for echoing previous approaches by the Obama and Biden administrations. Haley specifically highlighted potential risks associated with lifting sanctions against Iran.

On the other hand, some welcomed the de-escalation move. Piers Morgan expressed relief at Trump’s attempt to exit the conflict, although criticizing earlier decisions that he believes led to the situation.
