Toronto Marlies Win Calder Cup

The Toronto Marlies claimed the Calder Cup in the American Hockey League by defeating the Chicago Wolves 4-3 in Game 5. The match took place on Friday night.

Vinni Lettieri scored during a power play in the second period. Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jacob Quillan also found the net for the Marlies, affiliated with the NHL’s Maple Leafs. Landon Sim’s goal late in the first period reduced the Wolves’ lead to 2-1.

Artur Akhtyamov was in top form, making 27 saves for the Marlies. His postseason performance earned him the playoff MVP title, with a record of 15-7 and a 2.22 goals-against average plus a .923 save percentage. The Marlies previously won the Calder Cup in 2018.

For the Wolves, Felix Unger Sörum scored twice and contributed an assist. Josiah Slavin added another goal, while Cayden Primeau made 19 saves. The Wolves, whose parent club is the Carolina Hurricanes, boasted three Calder Cup victories prior. They avoided elimination with a 4-3 overtime victory in the preceding game of the best-of-seven series.
