For over three weeks, peaceful protests have been occurring in Tirana, the capital of Albania. These demonstrations have gained attention from American observers who view the protesters as symbols of resistance against perceived Trump family corruption and billionaire agendas.
The protests stem from public anger over the actions of security personnel associated with a planned coastal development. This project, which involves President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and Gulf investors, has a projected cost of over $4 billion.
Some American leftists see the Albanian protesters as opposing Trump family corruption and billionaire interests. Meanwhile, right-wing conspiracy theorists propose other narratives involving Israel and speculative connections to notorious figures.
However, the protesters in Albania emphasize a different focus. Elis Kodra, a 33-year-old protester, stated their cause is not against Trump or Israel. Instead, the protests target ongoing domestic issues, particularly criticizing longtime political leaders who have governed Albania since the fall of its Communist regime.
Protesters accuse these politicians of prioritizing personal and business connections while neglecting the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens. The protests are marked by symbolic actions, such as carrying flamingo cutouts, representing their cause during demonstrations.
