Poland’s response was swift, with President Karol Nawrocki announcing the revocation of Ukraine’s highest state award given to Zelensky. The tension reflects deep-seated historical disputes over wartime events.
Despite sharing a strong alliance against Russian expansionism and cooperating closely on military matters, Poland and Ukraine face ongoing historical disputes. The signing of the decree on May 26 honors Ukrainian nationalist fighters from World War II, specifically those from the Ukrainian Partisan Army (U.P.A.). These figures are viewed differently by the two nations. Poland attributes them to the killing of tens of thousands during what is remembered as the Volhynia Genocide. Ukraine commemorates them for their struggle against the Soviet Union.
This disagreement jeopardizes the alliance crucial to maintaining NATO’s eastern front against Russia. Poland serves as a significant transit hub for American and European weaponry and ammunition supplied to Ukraine.
The roughly decade-long struggle during and after World War II by the U.P.A. in western Ukraine remains the historical contention between both nations. The diplomatic efforts following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 aimed to quell historical disputes. Zelensky’s recent decree has renewed these tensions.
Despite these issues, both nations remain committed to opposing Russian aggression, striving to navigate historical challenges while focusing on defense priorities.
